Government to Release GH¢4bn to Resume Stalled Road Projects
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza has disclosed that government will pay contractors a total of GHC4 billion for projects executed.
This amount is a forms part of a GHC21 billion debt owed contractors which was inherited by the current government.
President Mahama on Monday, July 7 assured road contractors some of whom have abandoned road projects that they will soon be paid.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Minister revealed that the projects’ audit commissioned by the new government has now been completed, hence the decision to commence payment in July.
“If you listened to His Excellency the President yesterday (Monday, July 7), he indicated that the finance minister will be taking steps to retire some of the debt owed contractors so that they can go back to site and complete the project.
“On record we are intending to pay some GHC4 billion towards retiring parts of the GHC21 billion debt from this month,” he said.
Hon. Kwame Agbodza said government is committed to settling debts owed contractors and making provision for new works.
According to the Hon. Agbodza, some ongoing projects such as the Ofankor-Nsawam road project have been captured under the Big Push Agenda.
Hon. Agbodza consequently charged the contractor to ensure the inconveniences of commuters are addressed.
Project Manager for Maripoma, Agyenim Abdullai Mahama assured the Minister that the challenges on the stretch will be addressed within 6 weeks.
“I can assure the general public that the contractor has already mobilized to the site, we are going to intensify the works, without any act of to the rains, we are quite sure that within the next 6 weeks, that whole stretch would have been completed with a black top,” he assured.
The Minister appealed to road users for patience and cooperation during ongoing construction, acknowledging the temporary disruptions but emphasizing that these efforts are vital for long-term improvements in Ghana’s road infrastructure.
